Adding Objects to the Contents
When you add an object to the contents of a Book or an Index, you establish a relationship between the Book or Index and the object. Only certain types of object can be added:
- Only Index Entries can be added to the contents of an Index.
- Title Page, Table of Contents, Table of Figures, File, Topic, Glossary, and Index objects can be added to the contents of a Book.
Once you have added the object to the contents, you can use the Promote, Demote, Move Up, and Move Down arrows to change its location.

Tip: To add an Index Entry as a sub-entry of another Index Entry, hold the ALT key down while you drag and drop onto the Entry you want to contain your new one.
To Add an Object to the Contents of a Book or Index:
- Open the Book or Index you want to add an object to, and ensure you can see the Book Contents or Index Entries tab.
- Select an existing object to add from the Library Explorer, another Book, or another Index, or create a new object.
- When you add an object to the Book's Contents, the object is placed:
- At the root level at end of the Contents if you drop the object in a blank area of the Contents tab.
- Immediately below the currently selected object, at the same level of the tree. If you're dragging and dropping, drop onto the object that's directly above the position where you want to place the new object.
- When you add an Index Entry to your Index, the entry is automatically placed in alphabetical order, no matter where you drop it.
- When you create a new object it is added to the Book's Contents below the selected object, or in alphabetical order if it is an Index Entry.
- Save your changes to the Book or Index.
